Heart Forward Science is a convening place to think, feel, and create together ways to intertwine science, scholarship, and research endeavors with personal development of heart and soul. Right now these endeavors are kept quite separate, so much so, that science and scholarship are hindered by being intellect-only. Especially the ways in which we teach how to conduct research, the focus is primarily, if not only, on the intellect. HFS was launched on the premise that bringing imagination and intuition into play along with intellect will result in the development of knowledge that will better advance equitable, sustainable outcomes. This is what we call Heart Forward Science.

I am a mother and a daughter in a long line of wise women. I serve as a Professor of Social-Ecological Systems and Ecological Economics at the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) and Chair of the Board of Directors of National Council for Science and the Environment (NCSE). My scholarly focus is on systems approaches to social-ecological foundations for conservation and sustainability and the practice of collaborative interdisciplinary efforts to bring science into policy. My human focus is on healing old wounds of humanity and nature through authentic relationship.
